16/09 Spain–Belgium Security and Defence Business Exchange

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with Agoria (BSDI), is organising a speed networking event entitled “Spain-Belgium Business Meeting for the Security and Defence Industry” on Wednesday 16 September, from 10.00 to 13.15, which will take place at Agoria’s offices in Diegem (Amber Building, Hermeslaan 7, 1831).

Agoria BSDI is the cluster that gather Belgian companies providing technological solutions or services for military use – from rugged materials and mechatronics to digital systems for monitoring, communication and intervention.

The event aims to bring together a select group of Spanish and Belgian firms operating in the security and defence sector, with the aim of fostering high-value business relationships. To ensure the event’s direct focus, bilateral meetings are reserved exclusively for internal representatives and staff of the participating security and defence companies.

The programme will consist of one-to-one meetings lasting between 7 and 10 minutes, allowing participants to network with representatives from Belgian companies in the security and defence industry.

Participation is limited to 40 companies from the security and defence sector (20 from each country) to ensure the quality of interactions. On Wednesday 9 September 2026, from 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with Planinlux, is organising a conference on “Entrepreneurship in Luxembourg: key considerations, common mistakes and practical advice”, which will take place at the Chambre de Métiers (2, Circuit de la Foire Internationale L-1347 Luxembourg).

This conference is primarily aimed at people interested in starting a business in Luxembourg, as well as entrepreneurs and professionals who wish to gain a practical understanding of the main aspects to consider when setting up and developing a business in the Grand Duchy.

The event will feature Maria Catalán, founder and Managing Director of Planinlux, who will share practical recommendations based on her experience supporting entrepreneurs and companies in Luxembourg.

The conference will take a practical approach, offering real-life examples to help attendees avoid common pitfalls and make better decisions from the outset of their project.

For its part, the Chamber will present its entrepreneurship support programmes, EmprendeBeLux and the European Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs (EYE) programme.

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with its member company Certa Insurance Partners, is hosting a breakfast conference on “Managing tax risk through insurance” on 22 September, from 9:00 to 10:00. The event will take place at the Hotel Meliá Luxembourg (1 Park Drai Eechelen, 1499 Luxembourg).

The event will provide a practical overview of tax risk insurance as a tool for managing fiscal uncertainty in transactions and corporate structuring. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of the types of tax exposures that insurance can cover, as well as the jurisdictional considerations that shape the availability and scope of such coverage.

The session will walk participants through the end-to-end process of obtaining tax risk insurance, from the initial insurability assessment and engagement with underwriters to binding coverage and claims handling, and will include real-life examples drawn from the Luxembourg and Spanish markets.

The conference will feature four specialists from Certa Insurance Partners: Tom Cartwright, Director and Head of Tax; Alistair Godwin and Julia Monsech, Senior Tax Underwriters; and Alejandro Rams, Tax Underwriter.

Next Friday, 12^th June, from 9.00 to 10:00, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with its member PIA Group, is organizing a breakfast session on “Navigating Belgian VAT: Practical Guidance for Spanish and Foreign Businesses Expanding into Belgium”. The event will be led by Glenn Van Hemelrijck, VAT Director at PIA Group, and will take place in the Chamber’s premises (Av. des Arts 1-2, 9^th, 1210 Brussels).

This session is designed to give Spanish entrepreneurs the clarity they need to avoid costly mistakes and set up their Belgian activities correctly from the start.

During the conference, Glenn Van Hemelrijck will provide a clear and practical overview of the three main VAT scenarios for foreign companies operating in Belgium; when a VAT registration is required, and when it is not; the differences between operating without presence, via a fixed establishment, or through a subsidiary; as well as the common pitfalls and administrative hurdles foreign entrepreneurs face.

Van Hemelrijck will finish the intervention by giving practical insights to help those interested in expanding their business to Belgium choose the right structure for their businesses.

The Chamber holds a conference in Luxembourg on the key aspects of fund structuring for family offices

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with its partner Eversheds Sutherland Luxembourg, held an in-person conference in the Grand Duchy on Wednesday 29 April entitled ‘Fund structuring options for family offices’.

During the event, the speakers, all members of the Tax or Funds team at Eversheds Sutherland Luxembourg, outlined the key reasons why Luxembourg remains an attractive destination for Spanish investors, particularly when it comes to family businesses.

In this regard, Codrina Constantinescu, Funds Partner; Mercedes Pérez Cortejoso, Funds Senior Associate; Rafael Moll de Alba, Tax Partner; and Myrto Archontaki, Tax Senior Associate, presented the main structuring options available, analysed the regulatory and tax frameworks applicable to each, and offered practical guidance on selecting the most suitable vehicle according to different family objectives. The talk also featured Antonio Cuéllar, Tax Partner at Eversheds Sutherland’s Madrid office, who provided the Spanish market perspective.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session with attendees, which encouraged the exchange of perspectives and ideas.

On Wednesday, 10 June, from 9:00 to 10:30, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg is organising, in collaboration with its member company Harmon, the in-person workshop in Brussels on “Data-driven policy-making and case studies on measuring the social value of intangible assets, with support from Misura Economics by Harmon”. The event will take place at the Chamber’s offices (Avenue des Arts 1-2, Brussels).

This conference will offer a practical overview of the most advanced econometric methodologies in Europe for conducting impact studies and measuring the social value of intangibles, with particular focus on their application in engagement with public administrations and regulators.

European governments are increasingly drawing on these metrics to underpin their public policy decisions. Selecting the right methodology requires a thorough understanding of influence strategy, applicable regulatory frameworks, and the nature of the intangible to be quantified — factors of growing relevance as companies and institutions seek to demonstrate their social value to governments and regulators.

During this conference, Daniel Fujiwara, an economist specialising in social value measurement, will present the main measurement methodologies available, examine real-world cases in sectors such as utilities, telecommunications and infrastructure, and offer practical guidance on how to integrate these measurements into public affairs strategies.

EU Talks – Resilience Lab Explores Evolving EU Funding Priorities and Emerging Challenges in Project Design

On Tuesday, 14 April, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg hosted “EU Talks – Resilience Lab”, a hybrid conference held in the premises of the Chamber in Brussels. The event brought together professionals engaged in European projects to reflect on evolving funding dynamics, exchange experiences, and explore practical approaches to current and future challenges.

The session was opened by Andrea Galante, from the EU Project Management Department of the Chamber, and Ramón Vila, director of Vision Communication Consultancy, whose intervention provided a structured overview of the shifting landscape of EU funding. Drawing on recent global and European developments—including the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the outcomes of the 2024 European elections—he outlined how these factors are contributing to a gradual reorientation of priorities towards areas such as security, defence, and migration. These trends are also consistent with broader reflections at EU level, including the Draghi report, which underlines the need to reinforce Europe’s strategic autonomy and innovation capacity.

Beyond the analytical perspective, the event was designed as an interactive space, enabling participants to actively contribute their insights and experiences. Through a structured consultation exercise, attendees highlighted a shared perception of the current funding environment as increasingly competitive, complex, and demanding. Key challenges identified included intensified competition, the coordination of diverse and often large consortia, and the need to ensure stronger market relevance and impact of project proposals.

A particularly timely discussion focused on the growing use of Artificial Intelligence in proposal development. Participants reflected on both the opportunities and the limitations of these tools, pointing to the need to balance efficiency gains with the preservation of quality, strategic coherence, and originality in increasingly competitive calls.

Through initiatives such as EU Talks, the Chamber continues to consolidate its role as a facilitator of dialogue and a connector of stakeholders within the European project ecosystem. By creating spaces for exchange grounded in practical experience and peer learning, the Chamber supports organisations, strengthening their project design capacities, and fostering meaningful cross-border collaboration.

II Padel Tournament held in Luxembourg

II Padel Tournament held in Luxembourg

On Saturday 21 March, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with its partner EuroPadel, held the second edition of the Chamber’s Padel Tournament in Luxembourg, with the aim of promoting professional networking through sport amongst its network of contacts.

The tournament, for advanced players, began with a brief warm-up before the competition, which followed a group stage format. Each team – 24 in total – played a minimum of three matches, followed by the semi-finals and the final.

After the tournament, participants enjoyed a networking lunch with light refreshments and drinks, and prizes were awarded to the top three finishers. In addition, thanks to the collaboration with Macellum, two hampers of Spanish products were raffled off.

The conference “Spain-Belgium: Business, Investment, and Learning Opportunities” presents the findings of a study on Belgians’ perceptions of Spain

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with the Real Instituto Elcano, the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, and the Asociación de amigos Carlos de Amberes, organized a conference titled “Spain-Belgium: Business, Investment, and Learning Opportunities” on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

The event served to present the results of a study on mutual perceptions between Spain and the Benelux countries, as well as to analyze specific opportunities for economic cooperation, investment, and knowledge exchange between the two regions. The program included institutional presentations and a roundtable discussion with experts from the business and education sectors.

The conference began with a welcome address by the Chamber’s president, Pablo López-Álvarez, who highlighted the potential of Spanish companies and presented some success stories of his experience in Belgian markets. Additionally, Aimery de Schoutheete, president of the Asociación de Amigos de Carlos de Amberes, discussed the work of the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, which maintains and fosters cultural and economic ties between the Benelux countries and Spain.

Next, Fernando Gijón of the Real Instituto Elcano presented the main findings of a study on perceptions between Spain and the Benelux countries. In this regard, he outlined the image Belgians have of Spain with respect to work culture, the economy, and politics, among other factors. The study was conducted by the Real Instituto Elcano in collaboration with the Fundación Carlos de Amberes.

Following these two presentations, Marta Díez, founder and CEO of Top Bruselas and Alumni CEU, moderated a panel discussion featuring María Ortiz, Economic and trade Counselor at the Economic and Trade Office of the Embassy of Spain in Belgium; Marleen de Vijt, founder of Azull Real Estate, and Carolina Núñez, Director of Operations for France, Spain, and Costa Rica at EF Education, discussed the learning and investment opportunities available to Belgian professionals and companies in Spain. The event concluded with a networking cocktail reception where participants could share their perspectives on the topics discussed during the day.
