COCEF celebrates its 130th anniversary and delivers its 2016 awards

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in France (COCEF) celebrated its 130th anniversary on 15th December. The Spanish Ambassador in France, his Excellency Ramón de Miguel and the President of COCEF, Mr. José Michel García, handed the prizes of the 2016 COCEF awards.

Among the prizes awarded, SAICA received the Company of the year award, CT Ingenieros the the SMEs award and Mrs. Teresa Ribera (IDDRI director and former Spanish state minister for climate change) received the 2016 Person of the Year award.

During the event held in the prestigious Opera salon of the Paris le Grand Intercontinental Hotel, the president of the COCEF talked about the parallelism between the second industrial revolution and its enormous socio-cultural transformations that took place in 1886 (when COCEF was founded), with the current period, given the revolution taking place in the technological field and the new environmental challenges.

The Ambassador of Spain in France, his Excellency Ramón de Miguel, highlighted the close collaboration between COCEF and the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in France. He also emphasized the effectiveness and the importance of the role of COCEF in the international trade, for the companies’ services and congratulated and showed his admiration to the COCEF President.

Close to 200 people attended the event, including members of the Spanish diplomatic body and the executives of the most influential companies of both Spain and France.

The President of FEDECOM Juan Rodríguez-Villa Matons and the Secretary General of the Official Spanish Chamber in Belgium and Luxembourg, María Catalán, participated in the celebration supporting the activities developed by COCEF in France.

The Chamber takes part in the IV Edition of the European Parliament for Enterprises

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, represented by its President, Juan Rodríguez-Villa Matons, took part last 13 October in the IV Edition of the European Parliament of Enterprises (EPE) organised by the Spanish Chamber, and in collaboration with the European Parliament and EUROCHAMBRES.

The event was opened by the President of the Spanish Chamber, José Luis Bonet, in the welcome cocktail which took place on October 12. As in previous years, in the framework of the European Parliament of Enterprises, a working breakfast was organised between the business delegation and the Spanish MEPs in the Hemicyle the 13 October.

The meeting was held in the European Parliament, from 08:15-10:00 AM in the MEPs’ locations.

After the MEPs’ speeches, a question and answer period was opened and the Spanish business representatives could interact with them.

The working breakfast aims to building bridges between the business community and the European legislators in order to encourage an exchange of opinions and views about policies and Community programmes of interest to companies.

The European Parliament for Enterprises was held during the afternoon. Under the slogan “Europe needs Business, Business needs Europe” more than 800 entrepreneurs of 45 different European countries gathered in the Hemicycle of the European Parliament and rose to their feet to demonstrate their belief in the European project. Besides, they had  the chance to have a direct debate with high representatives of the EU institutions and to provide them with a direct bottom-up feedback on EU policies. “The time has come for businesses to reiterate their capacity and willingness to provide solutions to the challenges of today: globalisation, unemployment, unfair competition, migration and climate change.” With these words EUROCHAMBRES` Chairman Richard Weber inaugurated the fourth edition of the European Parliament of Enterprises.

During the subsequent debates and votes on trade, the single market, sustainability and skills, companies called for EU policies allowing them to contribute addressing these challenges while being able to compete globally.

Celebration of the National Holiday of the Embassy of Spain in Luxembourg

Last October 11 the Embassy of Spain in Luxembourg celebrated the National Holiday. The act, which took place in the Cercle Cité of Luxembourg, was sponsored by the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg and was attended by local authorities, entrepreneurs, Spanish representatives of the EU institutions and many Chamber members.

The Ambassador of Spain in Luxembourg, his Excellency Mr.Carlos María de Lojendio y Pardo Manuel de Villena, thanked the attendees their participation in the National Holiday, and the collaboration of the Chamber in the organization of the act. 

All the members of the Steering Committee of Luxembourg and the Secretary General of the Chamber attended to the act.

Juan Rodríguez-Villa Matons (Asproparks) and Pablo López Álvarez (FTI Consulting), re-elected President and Vice-President respectively of the Chamber

The Board of Directors from the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in a meeting held on the 7th of September in Brussels, unanimously re-elected Juan Rodríguez-Villa Matons (Asproparks) and Pablo López Álvarez (FTI Consulting) as President and Vice-President of the organization respectively for the next three years.

The President appreciated the Board of Directors’ confidence and stated that the achievements reached by the Chamber are the results of the teamwork between this board and the Secretary General. The renewal of the President and of the Vice-President, he added, satisfies the desire to continue the work begun in 2010 and which has led to an important Chamber’s growth, both in terms of activities and services, and in companies members (206 currently).

The Vice-President, in his intervention, reiterated his commitment to, jointly with the President and the Board of Directors, keep boosting the Chamber as a key platform in the promotions of the Spanish exportations and investments in Belux, as well as in the interaction with the European institutions.

The re-election of our President confirms the continuity of Rodríguez-Villa’s as a President of Fedecom –Europea-Africa-Asia-Oceania, a position to which he had been elected at the General Assembly of the chamber’s federation in these continents, held last December.

Our President has been confirmed as a member of the Spanish Chamber’s Plenary Committee.

Plenary session of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce: “It is impossible to be competitive without being sustainable”

Juan Rodríguez-Villa Matons, President of FEDECOM Europe.Africa-Asia-Oceania, participated in the Plenary session of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, which was held on 19 July Santander Bank’s headquarters in Madrid. The meeting was also attended by the Director-General for Environment of the European Commission, Daniel Calleja.

Calleja highlighted that the Chambers of Commerce have a crucial role to play in implementing policies to promote the competitiveness and the growth of our businesses. He claimed that to consolidate the economic recovery we have to work in four areas: investment, internationalization, innovation and adoption of new production models, and, finally, integration and education.

In addition, the Plenary session of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce approved the incorporation of Gestamp, Orange, SEAT, SUEZ Spain, Deloitte and Fire de Barcelona as vocal collaborators. With the inclusion of this new group of companies the business participation in the institution through the vocal collaborator role is widened and strengthened. Which is is a key element in the Chamber system empowerment.

Event #Yes2Belgium: Prime Minister Charles Michel thanks the Chamber its support to Belgium as an attractive place for foreign investments

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg coorganised, in collaboration with other 10 bilateral Chambers, an event the 22th June in Brussels, with the purpose of supporting Belgium as a safe investment place and as an attractive establishment location of foreign companies.

Under the slogan #Yes2Belgium, more than 360 distinguished guests, including business leaders, government officials and foreign diplomats, attended the event.

The Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, who thanked personally the support of the Chamber to our Vice-President, Pablo López Álvarez, leaded the event.

During their conversation, Prime Minister Charles Michel was interested in Spanish investments in Belgium and the Chamber’s activities. Pablo López Álvarez, outlined the compromise of Spanish companies with Belgium and remembered that our country is the seventh commercial partner of Belgium.

Our Vice-President invited personally Charles Michel to participate as keynote speaker in a future luncheon-debate of our forum “Business Circle”, an invitation to which the Prime Minister answered positively.

This initiative arose due to the events that happened the 22th March in Brussels. This initiative then wanted to reiterate that the international business community, which directly employs about 700,000 people in Belgium, recognizes the country as an attractive place for investments, a safe place to do business and a great place to live.

Resolution of Creative StartUp Europe Program

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, Finnova, FIBICC, the Department of Culture and Department of Labor and Social Security of the Spanish Embassy in Belgium, participating entities of Programme’s Creative StartUp Europe, agreed on providing personalized support fostering a relevant improvement as well as contributing to the general development of initiatives aimed at all program’s participating candidates*.

The Creative SartUp Europe Programme’s goal is primarily focused on the acknowledgement of the entrepreneurship of every Spanish young person located in Belgium regarding the cultural sector and creative industries. So on, this program aims at positively contributing to the empleability of Spanish youth living abroad in the cultural sector and creative industries.

In addition to this, thanks to the Program, the importance of culture and innovation as tools for the enhancement of social and economic development is recognized. As well as contributing to the stimulation of new generations to be employed at cultural projects abroad.

The Creative StartUp Europe Programme accounts for a relevant support towards culture, creation and innovation conceived as paths for entrepreneurship and support of enterprising in Belgium.

*Fulfillment of call’s requirements is required.

Board of Directors meeting

Last May 19th, the Official Chamber’s Board of Directors met in Brussels.

During the meeting, annual 2015 accounts of the Chamber were approved. A specific date was also scheduled for the celebration of the General Assembly, Tuesday 28th of June in Brussels.

Furthermore, the program of the Chamber’s next months’ activities was introduced and other relevant topics for the institution were discussed along the meeting. Further discussion focused on the Chamber’s strategic plan in the mid and short term.

The President of FEDECOM participates in the Plenary of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce

Juan Rodríguez-Villa Matons, President of the Official Spanish Chambers of Commerce in Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania, participated in the Plenary of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, which took place on 19 April in Madrid.

Iberia, Banco Sabadell, Endesa and Alstom España became member of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce. With these incorporations the corporate involvement in the Plenary, which is the highest governance body of the institution and in which the 28 largest Spanish companies are represented in their respective sectors, is strengthened.

The President of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, José Luis Bonet, highlighted the commitment of the large companies with the institutional project of the Spanish Chamber, which became evident once again with these new incorporations. “The improvement of the competitiveness of SMEs and its internationalization are two strategic objectives of the Spanish Chamber and the leading capacity of the most important companies of the country is essential in order to achieve these objectives”, Bonet emphasized.

The institutional support of the large companies as well as its economic contribution allow the launch of new support programs for the SMEs and entrepreneurs in order to strengthen the Spanish production system and its implementation by means of the 88 Chambers, which ensures the structuring of the territory.
