The Chamber discusses the European Commission’s simplification agenda with Michael Hager
On Tuesday 27 October, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg held a luncheon debate at the Hotel The Dominican in Brussels, as part of its Círculo de Negocios forum, with Michael Hager, Head of Cabinet of Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity. The event was sponsored by Orgalim, the federation representing Europe’s technology industries, and was held under the Chatham House Rule.
Following an introduction by the Chamber’s President, Pablo López Álvarez, Ulrich Adam, Director General of Orgalim, opened the debate with remarks on the burden of regulatory costs on European industry and the need to build simplicity by design into new legislation.
The keynote focused on the European Commission’s simplification agenda and on what is needed for companies to see tangible results before the end of the mandate. Topics included the progress of the omnibus packages through Parliament and Council, the review of existing legislation, how to measure burden reduction, gold-plating in national transposition, the use of artificial intelligence to detect regulatory overlaps, deepening the single market, and Europe’s role in the current geopolitical context.
The Q&A session, with representatives of European business associations and companies active in the EU, gave participants the chance to raise concrete cases from their sectors and to continue the conversation on how to strengthen European competitiveness.
The Chamber thanks Michael Hager for his participation and for the time devoted to the audience’s questions, Orgalim for its sponsorship, and Bocopa for the wine served during the lunch.
