12/01 Conference “De la Filología a la inteligencia artificial: qué son las humanidades digitales”
The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with the Círculo Cultural Español Antonio Machado, is organising on Tuesday 12 January 2027, from 18:30 to 19:30, the conference “De la Filología a la inteligencia artificial: qué son las humanidades digitales” (From Philology to artificial intelligence: what are the digital humanities?), given by Dr Elena Fernández Fernández, to be held at the Círculo’s premises (Grand-Rue 72, 1st floor, L-1660 Luxembourg).
Drawing on real examples, she will show how some of the most widely used text-processing algorithms in the field work, such as information retrieval, sentiment analysis and topic modelling, and how they turn thousands of press articles into data that can be compared over time and across countries. She will also present the results of GLOTECH, the project she led with a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship from the European Commission, which uses the press to study the role of technology in processes of modernisation and globalisation.
Dr Fernández Fernández studied English Philology at the University of Salamanca and earned her PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, before moving from the humanities to data science. In this outreach talk she will look back on that path and explain what the digital humanities are: a discipline that applies data analysis to the study of texts, the press and culture.
The talk will be held in Spanish and will close with a Q&A session. It is aimed at a non-specialist audience: no prior technical knowledge is needed.
Free entrance, compulsory registration. Places are limited, with priority for members of the Chamber and of the Círculo Antonio Machado.
