XI edition of the Company of the Year Award announced

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg announces the XI edition of the Company of the Year Award. An honor that aims annually to promote the Spanish economic and business development in the BeLux region, rewarding the experience and demonstration of leadership and competitiveness of companies in their sector of activity.

The deadline for submitting nominations is September 30th at 12:00 noon (Brussels), and they must be presented in writing to the Secretary General, signed by the legal representative of the company.

The jury will be composed by the Board of Directors of the Chamber, which will take into account the public image of the firm, its contribution to promote the “Spain Brand”, the internationalization projects, the social commitment or the improvements produced throughout its trajectory, among other indicators.

As in previous editions, the winner will be announced on our website, where it will join the list of winners in the last nine years: Air Europa (2013), Indra (2014), Orona (2015), everis (2017), Grupo Social ONCE (2018), Cacesa (2020), FCC Construcción (2021), Bankinter Luxembourg (2022), Zabala Innovation (2023) and Sener (2024).

21/09 Event on the 40 years of Spain and Portugal in the EU: shaping Europe’s Economic Future

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg and the Belgian-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce are organising an onsite conference on “40 years of Spain and Portugal in the EU: shaping Europe’s Economic Future” next Monday 21^st September, from 16.00 to 19.30, which will take place in Hotel NH Collection Grand Sablon (Rue Bodenbroek 2, 1000 Brussels).

The event marks the 40^th anniversary of Spain and Portugal’s accession to the European Union, highlighting their contribution to European integration, their strategic role as global connectors for the EU and the role their companies play in shaping Europe’s future.

The programme will consist of an Institutional Dialogue between the State Secretaries for the European Union from Spain and Portugal, Fernando Sampedro and Inês Domingos, that will address the achievents of these last 40 years and the strategic outlook for the future.

This will be followed by a roundtable with the representatives of Iberian companies operating internationally on how Spain and Portugal can promote the Global Business Expansion in infrastructure, logistics or digital transformation within the framework of the EU Global Gateaway strategy, and their position as a bridge between Europe and Latin America and Africa.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session and a networking cocktail.

Please briefly describe your career history.

After more than 30 years leading fund administration and operations at leading asset management firms, I have made the move to the provider side to bring that perspective to RD Sistemas, a leading group in technology and services for the investment industry in Spain and Latin America, and I am now driving its expansion in Luxembourg.

What business does your company currently carry out in Luxembourg?

RD Services Luxembourg provides fund administration services for UCITS and alternative investment vehicles from Luxembourg. As an entity authorised by the CSSF, we support fund managers and investors throughout the fund’s operational cycle, from Central Administration and Transfer Agent services to Domiciliation services.

What added value does your company offer in Luxembourg compared to your competitors?

Our key differentiator is combining a distinctly technology-driven DNA with in-depth expertise in fund administration. As the first fund administrator with a Spanish corporate culture established in Luxembourg, we bring together our own proprietary platform — developed over more than 30 years — with a highly specialised team. On 27^th and 28^th January 2027, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg will organise a training session on “Public speaking and networking: How to understand and connect with your audience”, in collaboration with Masha Tarle, Communications Skills Trainer and Communication Expert.

This is a highly practical, interactive course designed for young professionals working in policy, NGOs, and public affairs in Brussels. Over two focused half-days, participants learn how to speak with clarity and confidence, navigate networking situations with ease, and communicate persuasively in complex or high-stakes environments.

Through short presentations, real-time feedback, and hands-on exercises, the course helps you build presence, credibility, and meaningful professional connections — whether you’re speaking in a meeting, at an event, or introducing yourself to the right people.

Henri Piffaut discusses the evolution of the Foreign Subsidies Regulation and the challenges involved in its implementation within the EU

The Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg held a breakfast debate last Monday, 13 July, as part of its ‘Competencia España’ working group and its ‘Business Circle’ forum, a breakfast debate featuring Henri Piffaut, adviser to the Director responsible for the Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR) at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition (DG COMP). During the event, the speaker analysed the development and impact of this new European instrument for monitoring competition within the single market, as well as the main challenges arising from its entry into force in 2023.

The event began with the introduction of Mr Piffaut by the president of Competencia España, Cecilio Madero, who welcomed the attendees and outlined the speaker’s professional background, highlighting his experience in advising on the development of European policy regarding foreign subsidies, as well as on the interpretation and application of the Regulation within DG COMP.

During the session, the group analysed how the Foreign Subsidies Regulation introduces a specific instrument to examine the economic advantages granted by third countries to European Union companies and to assess whether they may cause distortions in the internal market.

Fair competition

The debate highlighted that the aim of the CSR is not to restrict foreign investment, but to ensure a level playing field within the single market. During the session, the main areas of application were reviewed, covering business concentrations, public procurement and ex officio investigations; as well as the importance of the guidelines published by the Commission in January 2026 to strengthen legal certainty and promote a consistent application of the Regulation.

Among the main challenges identified, the need to strike a balance between effective oversight and the administrative burden that certain procedures may entail was highlighted. In this regard, the discussion addressed the improvement of processes such as pre-notification, drawing on the first decisions issued by the Commission under the new regime in transactions involving investors from the Gulf region.

During the question-and-answer session, the concept of distortion was analysed, along with the criteria used to determine whether a foreign subsidy may affect the internal market, taking into account both the improvement in the beneficiary company’s competitive position and its potential effects on competition. The balancing test was also discussed, which allows the negative effects of a subsidy to be weighed against its potential positive effects.

The session concluded with a discussion on the international scope of the RSE, its relationship with other competition instruments, and the challenge of striking a balance between economic openness, attracting foreign investment and safeguarding effective competition within the European Union.

The Chamber attends the CAMACOES General Assembly, where the organisations strengthen their partnership to promote business internationalisation

From 7 to 9 July, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg took part in the working sessions held as part of the General Assembly of the 45 Official Spanish Chambers of Commerce Abroad (CAMACOES), which served to strengthen collaboration and learn about best practice, as well as to explore new opportunities for collaboration with the aim of supporting and promoting the internationalisation of Spanish companies, particularly SMEs.

The meeting enabled the network of national and overseas chambers to share experiences and best practices, make progress on new cooperation mechanisms, and welcome the Chambers of Malaysia, Ireland and Canada – recently recognised as official bodies – as well as to hear from the Chamber of Venezuela, which is currently undergoing reconstruction following the earthquake on 26 June.

The president of the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, Pablo López Álvarez, and the secretary-general, Marta González Benguria, took part in the working sessions alongside the presidents and secretaries-general of the 45 CAMACOES present in 43 countries across five continents. The Network of Spanish Chambers Abroad has 8,376 member companies — 33.8 per cent more than in 2020 — and is one of the main tools for supporting business internationalisation.

Cohesion and coordination

At this conference, organised by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, its president, José Luis Bonet, stated that “in the face of market instability and uncertainty, technological challenges and the barriers that are emerging, the response must not be to retreat but rather to pursue greater internationalisation, and businesses – particularly SMEs – cannot be left to navigate this path alone”. For Mr Bonet, this meeting was “an opportunity to move forward, with greater cohesion and coordination amongst the chambers, to put what I call ‘the chamber army’ in a position to adapt our actions and our roadmap to the new needs of businesses”.

For his part, Juan Luis Gimeno, Director-General of Trade Intelligence at the Secretary of State for Trade, emphasised that “we are witnessing the emergence of a new world order in which the role of Chambers of Commerce is more important than ever. Their ability to provide businesses with the tools and services that facilitate internationalisation will be crucial in enabling a greater number of SMEs to grow and compete in international markets.”

Furthermore, the president of the Federation of Official Chambers of Commerce of Spain in Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania (FEDECOM), Guillermo Cobelo, called upon the chamber network’s experience and capacity for learning to tackle the challenges ahead, and emphasised the importance of learning from mistakes, strengthening areas for improvement and building on existing strengths to continue contributing to business progress and the creation of a “more prosperous future for Spain”.

During the Assembly, the Secretary-General of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Adolfo Díaz-Ambrona, and the institution’s Legal Director, Fernando Cabello de los Cobos, addressed the challenges of good governance within Chambers of Commerce and the role of CIIAM. “Trust has become a strategic asset for organisations, and good governance must be understood as a commitment to transparency, objectivity and the public interest, going beyond legal obligations,” emphasised Díaz-Ambrona. Both also highlighted the role of CIIAM (the International and Ibero-American Arbitration Centre of Madrid) as a leading institution for international arbitration in the Ibero-American region.

24/09 Onsite event “Climate Transition and Competitiveness: Spanish Companies in the European Industrial Agenda”

On 24 September, from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m., the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, in collaboration with alinnea, the climate action think tank of its member IE University, is organising the event “Climate Transition and Competitiveness: Spanish Companies in the European Industrial Agenda”.

The climate transition has become a key pillar of Europe’s competitiveness agenda. Through initiatives such as the Competitiveness Compass and the Clean Industrial Deal, the European Union is linking decarbonisation, industrial policy and economic resilience to strengthen its position in the global economy.

This agenda is driving new measures to accelerate investment in low-carbon technologies, foster industrial innovation and improve access to financing. In this context, climate action is increasingly regarded not only as an environmental imperative, but also as a key driver of business competitiveness and economic growth.

During the event, the main findings of the study Climate Action in Spanish Companies will be presented. This is the first study conducted in Spain to assess the impact of corporate climate initiatives on competitiveness, including among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The session will also provide a forum for a practical discussion on how businesses can leverage European funding opportunities and the evolving industrial policy framework to strengthen their competitive advantage in the new European industrial landscape.
