Last Monday, October 20, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg organized the conference “AI at Work: Opportunities, Risks, and Legal Compliance,” in collaboration with the Chamber’s member firm, Derecho360.

The conference was led by Laura Van Gompel, lawyer specializing in Mexican and Belgian law and data protection and contracts, and Yirley Gonzales, a lawyer specializing in Peruvian law and copyright and trademark protection.

The conference addressed the most key topics related to AI in the workplace, shedding light on a constantly evolving subject. In the first section, the speakers offered a detailed overview of the legal bases of important regulations such as the GDPR and the AI Act, as well as the associated rights, obligations, risks, and opportunities. The speakers provided expert legal insights into the various articles that make up the regulations, as well as how they might affect companies that operate part of their business in the European Union.

The second section highlighted practical cases of AI use in the workplace, illustrating, among other things, how to handle rights and obligations related to data management and protection, as well as risk classifications for the use of AI and issues related to its application and enforcement.

Finally, the conference opened the door for questions and comments on topics such as AI literacy and the difference between general-purpose AI and specific-purpose AI.
