Luncheon-debate with Mairead McGuinness, Commissioner for Financial Services and Stability and Capital Markets Union

On the 19th of July, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg hosted a new luncheon-debate as part of its “Business Circle” platform, in which the Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness, spoke about the priorities of the European Commission during the second part of her mandate.

First came the pandemic. Then, the war in Ukraine. Two situations that have shaken the whole world beyond the economic level and that McGuinness wanted to underline to remind that, despite adversity, the EU Member States have learned that only together they could move forward.

The world is changing faster than expected. Roadmaps drawn up in response to the coronavirus crisis are now being adapted again in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions imposed. The result? Inflation is increasingly squeezing global economies, especially emerging ones, and central banks and other institutions such as those in the EU are working against the clock to ensure resilience.

During the event, which brought together a good number of company executives, delegates from Spanish regions, representatives of Spanish and European institutions, and representatives of Spanish and international organizations, consultants and partners of the Chamber, the Commissioner has focused precisely on the challenges and opportunities that have become more urgent: energy security, the stability of financial markets, the new taxonomy, the European Green Deal or the digital euro.

Regulate for the future

Beneath the opportunities for progress, there is also a challenge: to regulate for the future, not for the past. Open banking, open finance, cryptocurrencies, green transition… these are just some of the terms that still need to be understood and whose regulations or guidelines have to balance innovation with stability in the existing financial systems.

McGuinness concluded the event by reminding that, just the system she lived through during the 1980s and 1990s no longer bears similarities with the current one, neither will the one of the future. Therefore, during her office term, it is important that the long-term vision is preserved.

As part of the debate, the Finance Commissioner answered questions from the attendees, who took the opportunity to express their willingness to the implementation of the European green taxonomy, as well as pondered the possible role of traditional banking in the digital euro project.

The Chamber would like to thank the Commissioner for her participation, as well as to show a particular gratitude to Bodegas Carpe Diem, whose wines “Gadea Syrah Tinto” and “Montespejo Blanco” were tasted by all the attendees, which made this luncheon-debate a very successful one.

HM The King receives CAMACOES representatives in Madrid

On July 5 and 6, the 44 Official Spanish Chambers of Commerce Abroad (CAMACOES) met in Madrid to participate in different strategic sessions organized by the State Secretariat of Commerce and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber was represented by its President, Pablo López Álvarez, and its General Secretary, Marta González.

During the meeting, the chambers had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the international financing tools that the State Secretariat of Commerce offers to companies in their internationalization process, as well as the new aspects of the regulations governing the chambers abroad and the digitalization plan of CAMACOES, launched through the National Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience.

In response, the foreign chambers shared the best practices of the network, explored other avenues of collaboration with their counterparts in Spain, and identified new projects along with the Spanish Chamber of Commerce.

Absolute allies

Furthermore, the Secretary of State for Trade, Xiana Méndez, underlined the “essential work” of accompanying companies carried out by the chambers during the pandemic, and also stressed the importance of public-private collaboration, exemplified by the Spanish chambers of commerce abroad. A private initiative with “public service vocation” that becomes a “key instrument of the administration” and “absolute allies” in the countries where they are located.

José Luis Bonet, president of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, did not miss the opportunity to highlight how the Official Spanish Chambers of Commerce abroad are “an essential platform for Spanish companies to expand internationally”, especially in a context such as the current one.

To conclude, His Majesty the King received in audience the main representatives of CAMACOES, who explained to His Majesty the key role of the Chambers abroad in supporting the internationalization of Spanish companies; an essential platform for the economic recovery, and an effective instrument of public-private collaboration and business diplomacy.

Online Training “European Tenders and Opportunities as an Expert”

On 5, 6 and 7 July, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg organised the online training “European tenders and opportunities: do it like an expert”.

During the three days, Karine Brück, founding partner of Karine Brück International (Ecosolve SL), a partner company of the Chamber, shared with the participants her experience in European tenders.

On the first day, Karine Brück explained the difference between a European call for projects and a call for tenders, as well as the new financial framework 2021-2027. She also shared some tips on how to identify opportunities at European level.

On the second and third day, participants discovered the complete process of preparing a tender, from the creation of international consortia to the search for experts, through both theoretical knowledge and case studies.

On the last day, participants had the opportunity to present their questions and receive advice from an expert consultant.

From the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg, we would like to thank Karine Brück for her collaboration and dedication and the participants for their presence.
